Mold or Mildew in Your Home?
How Can a Homeowner Keep Mold or Mildew From Growing in Their Home After Experiencing Water Damage?
QUESTION: Mold or Mildew…Why can’t I just turn the heater on high and bring some fans in to dry my house out?
ANSWER: When a PuroClean vehicle arrives at a property, it is already equipped with specialty drying equipment and air cleaning equipment meant to get started quickly to prevent or at least minimize the chances of mold or mildew taking over at your home.
Industrial Type Equipment
This is not equipment that you can go to your local big box home improvement location and buy or rent. These pieces of equipment are designed and manufactured expressly for the restoration industry.
Many people will incorrectly refer to some of this equipment as fans. A fan is meant for moving or removing air from a space and making people more comfortable.
The “fan” we use is better described as a high capacity air mover. It’s specially designed and engineered in such a way as to move massive amounts of air very close to the ground to create a vortex of drying along the floors. It is critical to accomplish the surface drying first in a water damage situation using HEPA filtration devices. The word HEPA is used to loosely describe a lot of different techniques. We abide by the standards of HEPA filtration that we must achieve per regulations. Our equipment is manufactured to meet commercial industry standards and the filters are thicker to provide cleansing of more of the particles from the air.
Filters and HEPA Standards
When we are finished with each filter, it is removed from the equipment and immediately wrapped, sealed and properly disposed of offsite. This is to prevent continued contamination of any kind. The best response is to “prevent”, which requires careful control and management of even our own equipment. In short, the HEPA air cleaner that is sold by respected retailers such as Sharper Image or someone like them, is not the type of HEPA air cleaner equipment that we would unload from our trucks and bring into your home. Very different pieces of equipment and the process and the approach that we’re taking is not able to be duplicated with product that were available at retail to the typical homeowner or consumer.
Another type of equipment needed for any mold or mildew remediation or structural drying projects are very powerful, very efficient dehumidifiers. They might be called low-grade refrigerant dehumidifiers or desiccant dehumidifiers. Again, there are dehumidifiers that are available in the retail markets, but the difference is they are not a commercial grade or performance piece of equipment.
We are there to dry entire rooms, and not just on the surfaces that are visible. PuroClean Restoration understands that water soaks deep into surfaces such as concrete slabs for instance. Our equipment must provide effective, penetrating drying, not just the easy-to-get-to spots or surfaces.
Mold or Mildew Health Hazards
If these hidden or more deeply soaked areas are ignored or a company tells you that it’s “good enough”, then you should start worrying and get them out of your home as quickly as possible. These are the perfect breeding areas for mold or mildew to begin to grow from. Of course they must be effective at drying surface areas off, but should also be protecting you and your home by drying tight corners, underneath surfaces and drying or removing materials to allow drying of hidden areas and wall cavities.
Each piece of equipment used by a professional restoration contractor is much larger, much more powerful, much more efficient, and has been designed and refined to get your house completely dried out.
